Dogs don’t think in sentences — they think in moments. Every second, they’re making micro‑decisions based on what they see, feel, and experience. When you understand how those decisions form, you gain the ability to communicate with clarity instead of confusion.
The Communication Loop That Shapes Every Choice
In the video, I break down the core communication loop that influences every behavior your dog shows. This loop is simple, but once you understand it, you’ll see your dog’s actions differently.
The loop is made of four parts:
1 – Behavior
2 – Marker
3 – Consequence
4 – Release
This sequence repeats all day long, whether you’re training or not.
Behavior: The Dog’s Moment‑to‑Moment Decision
Behavior is simply the dog choosing what to do in that exact moment. It might be sitting, breaking a command, checking in, pulling, ignoring, or focusing. Dogs are constantly making choices — your job is to label those choices clearly.
When you understand that behavior is information, not “good” or “bad,” communication becomes cleaner.
Markers: Giving Meaning to the Moment
Markers tell the dog what that moment meant. They bridge the gap between human and canine communication.
Your marker system gives instant clarity:
1 – CHIP → correct moment
2 – GOOOOOOD!!! → maintain the behavior
3 – AH‑AH → interrupt the behavior
4 – NO!!!!!!!! → incorrect choice
5 – BREAK → release from command
Markers remove confusion. They tell the dog, “This choice matters.”
Consequences: Clarifying the Meaning
A marker without a consequence is noise. The consequence is what makes the marker real.
1 – After CHIP → reward
2 – After GOOOOOOD!!! → continue duration
3 – After AH‑AH → redirect
4 – After NO!!!!!!!! → apply consequence / guide back
5 – After BREAK → freedom
This is where learning happens. Dogs understand cause and effect better than anything else.
Release: Closing the Loop
The release word (BREAK) ends the command and resets the learning cycle. Without a release, dogs release themselves — which leads to inconsistency, confusion, and unreliable obedience.
The release creates closure. Closure creates clarity. Clarity creates confidence.
